On your Lino, Draw ....and Print!

Lino Printing Session:

In our last session we attempted (and succeeded!) in the good old printing technique of lino cutting.
After a short trial and play with the various cutting blades and blocks (polymer and recycled leather) my student artists confidently 'dug away' at their chosen images.
We only had minor injuries...so no fingers gone missing in the process!
Once everybody printed their images with various colours on different papers students cut and collaged their prints into new  colourful and individual images.

Hands - on Art!

Drawing your non-writing hand with your writing hand:

Drawing  the human hand is probably one of the most difficult tasks even for the more accomplished artist.
It requires focus, concentration, perception and observation..which the right side of our brain is responsible for. Unfortunately we tend to use our left side of the brain most in our busy, analytic and achievement driven daily lives. So as artists....and healthy human beings....we need to practice, for example, the use of pure perception, without any judgement ('this is wrong, looks horrible, I can't draw!', etc.), just observing the lines and shapes in front of our eyes and carefully following these with our pencil in the drawing hand.
The results are astonishing, as you can see from the images below. A couple of students have not done any drawing since early childhood!
I have based this session on Betty Edwards' book 'Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain' (4th Edition).

The End of the 'Being Creative Course 1': Feedback

Extracts from written feedback by participants:

'It was excellent and Silke is a wonderful, relaxed, friendly and inspiring teacher.'

'I found the art class at FN fun, creatively inspiring and mostly, at odd times, great at boosting my confidence.'

'I liked Silke as a teacher. Silke is a very approachable, generous lady with masses of knowledge on all types of artists, media and crafts.'

'I have gained a lot from the course, not just art-wise.I have become social instead of an isolated loner and really enjoyed being with the other members of the group. I have made a new friend and have met up with them outside of the course, so I have gained a great deal from this course.'

' I really enjoyed the course and doing different art activities each week and being challenged to try new mediums in ways I wouldn't have, if not on the course.'

Thanks everyone! It was an honour to be part of your artistic and personal journeys!

The 'Being Creative Course 2' resumes again on Wednesday, September 11th, 10am - 4pm, at Furniture Now Training Centre in Lewes. All welcome, no experience necessary. Classes are free to those on benefits or the unemployed.

'Being Creative Group' @ Lewes ArtWave Festival 2013

We have done it!

The flyers have been printed and the artworks have been framed and displayed at the Furniture Now warehouse in Lewes, East Sussex.
The artists (and teacher!) are exhausted but very proud at the outcome.
The normally rather functional, dark warehouse floors have been transformed into a 'pop -up' gallery space for two weeks.
The feedback from staff and regular customers are phenomenally positive and encouraging, with lots of interest in the course (which will start again in September!).
So, here we go...some pictures taken on the opening day!

Art Wave @ FN!

The Countdown is running....

Only 3 weeks to go before the launch of this years' Lewes Art Wave Festival and before the local 'Furniture Now!' branch will be transformed into a gallery of fantastic art works produced by the members of the weekly Art Class during the past 5 months (see 2 posts previously).

Here are some visual 'tasters'.....
